Default 2nd time (on topic please) what is best "off the rack" AR-15 to buy?

    The question is:
what brand is a good brand to buy that meets the requirements to shoot in NRA /CMP matches (using 77 and 80 grain sierra match king bullets = 1 in 7 to 1 in 8 twist.. One in Nine does NOT work.....ask me how I know).
The class is "NRA Service Rifle" (carry handle, no muzzle brake, rear peep site and front post sight, semi-auto only).

example: 1) compass lakes engineering, 2) Rock River Arms 3) Lewis Machine Tool, 4) DPMS etc. etc..
    TIA
    Bob

    1) Rock River Arms National Match or 2) Stag Arms NM. Both Manufacturers make a gun that meets specs. IMHO.

I found two complete rifles that meet your stated requirements if you want a post ban rifle (no A2 flash suppresser).

    Armalite:

    Bushmaster:

I have a Rock River and Bushmaster. Both are excellent quality and known for being among the best for the money. Both make competition rifles.

Okay from the top again kid, White Oak Precision, Rock River, Armalite, Les Bauer, Colt, Bushmaster, Stag, all are great rifles. pick one you like, buy a dern good reloader outfit (suggest Dillon 550B or RCBS rockchucker) plenty of Varget , primers, bullets & cases & shoot until you are doing better, then shoot MORE.

The WOA uppers are widely known in the service rifle world with proven HM scores and pinned rear sights. CLE has the same reputation. The RRA NM A2 is also a great place to start, and they are known for decent triggers. Rem/ Bushmaster makes a great NM service rifle, and they actively support the game with the best clinic you will ever attend, offered at the Eastern and Western Games/Creedmoor matches. The Armalite is the original maker of the platform, and also offer a DCM/CMP service rifle as good as any. Stag Arms makes a good rifle, but their claim to fame is the left handed upper. They are not really in the NM service rifle market because left handed rifles are not legal in CMP service rifle. Some people build a Colt to NM specs because they want the horsey on their rifle just like their good ol' service days, and for them the extra cost is worth it.
The NM service rifle is pretty much a recipe developed by the AMU, CMP and above mentioned manufactures. Unless special ordered to be different the WOA, CLE, RRA, Armalite, and Bushy will have a 1 in 8 heavy contour Wilson with Wylde chamber, free float tube under the hand guard, 1/2min, 1/4 min, or 1/2X1/4 min rear sight with interchangeable apertures. The WOA, and CLE have adjustable front sight bases.
Picking one is like being the judge in an apple pie contest. They are all made with the same recipe, but each pie is different in their own small way. But each is a darn good apple pie. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Looks like some of the same names keep coming up. I also have a DPMS AR that is really a great shooter.

Nice thing about the AR rifle is its inherently accuracy. We could shoot some really nice groups with the A1s and A2s we had in the service. With any reputable manufacturer with a proven track record, its hard to go wrong. These rifles will shoot better than the average shooter. With the august field of choices laid out here, recommend that you find the best deal for you and get on with it. The other great news is that the .223 cartridge is about the easiest there is to make accurate reloads with, very friendly to many combinations of powders and components. I have not found a powder yet among the many choices that my Bushmaster does not like with Sierra 69s or green tip 62s.

I shoot pistol and while I have opinions (40 + yrs exp) I always advise newcomers to go to the matches and see what the winners are using. Most of these guys are only to happy to give advise on setups and loading info.

You need a 1/7 twist barrel. I used to shoot high power at the club with a Colt match H bar.
