Default Quick question - scope mount for old Universal carbine

One of my buddies has a Universal that his dad handed down to him, and would like to be able to mount some type of optic on it to use it for plinking. His "iron sight" eyesight is a bit past its prime, and either a low magnification scope or a holographic sight would be perfect - Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    TF

If you take off the stock, there is a plastic bar on the left side of the receiver that pulls off and covers the mounting holes. They actually made a scope mount for that gun. I had one, I have no idea if I still do.
I got my Universal around 1970. It was my first gun and I still have it. It does work.

If you do a web search for "scope mount for universal m1 carbine" you're gonna find a bunch of 'em.
I have one on my Universal, but it's not for sale yet.
    Good luck.

Thanks guys! I see that Numrich has two items listed

    574030B - Side mount base @ $23.50 &
    574020B - Side scope mount w/ 1" rings, long @ $17.05

    Anyone know the difference ?

    Thanks again!

The only mount I have used was the old S&K that replaces the rear sight.

Probably need both. The side mount should be the part that connects to the receiver, the side scope mount is probably the part that the rings attach to?
I would not bother, I found the thing would not stay on.

There's a very good discussion of this issue (complete with pics of the two parts needed) @ maxicon.com/guns/universal. Includes installation tips & observations about using the setup.

That's the one I use. If you attach it using Loctite it'll stay on just fine......
