Vulch, I have never done any kind of scientific study but I have seen rifles with a buildup on guns that have come from a place with heavy tobacco smoke over a long period of time. I believe tobacco tars will accumulate on rifles that are coated with a thin coat of oil. I would like to hear from anyone who has observed this.

Back in the days when you could smoke in taverns, I remember seeing old wall hanger guns hanging on the wall behind the bar, that had a brown color like coating on them. You might have something there.............

I do commercial sign work and they still smoke in bars around here. Neon tubing must have an affinity to it, it gets coated heavily with what I guess is tar.

I asked my dealer about the guy - he smoked a pipe every day of his life.

I have the flu right now, but yes, I can smell SOMETHING, and it is a waxy kind of feeling too. The bolt shroud had also a whitish deposit on it, that cleaned off to reveal a perfect finish underneath.

Considering ALL the guns are the same - from the P'53 muskets up to the Low Wall Winchesters and the military rifles, it seems possible.

Well done Vulch. I had the .22 and matching 3006 they sure were eye catchers at the range. Still have a few pictures some where.

    Cheers

Guns that have spent many years on a mantle over a fireplace have the same thick coating that is described above. The good news is that this coating can preserve the finish on the gun. Bad news is the time and effort spent to remove it from all exterior and interior areas. George in NH

Found a picture of the 3006 and I still have the original front sight. LOL I have to call the person and offer it for free it's such a nice rifle. I did not like the globe sight. At two hundred yards it covered the the target with the cross or the circle insert.
