    Default RIA bolts

I was having a discussion on another forum about nickel steel bolts. If I'm reading the charts correctly Rock Island made nickel steel bolts starting in August 1918. Someone said that in ns bolts did not show up until May 1927 per Hatcher's Notebook and Harrison's guide. What's the correct answer?

RIA began manufacturing of nickel steel bolts in August 1918. I have one of the straight handle early nickel steel bolts.

That's what I thought. I have a RIA bolt marked like that.

The 1927 date was when Springfield started using nickel steel. I'd have to look at see if that was blanks obtained from Rock Island or "original" blanks.

You read the charts correctly. Rock Island began making nickel steel bolts in August, 1918.

Springfield reported using some Rock Island nickel steel bolts during 1928 and 1929. But as far as we know, those bolts were leftover from WWI and exhibit Rock Island markings. The first Springfield nickel steel bolts did not appear until January, 1929.

    Hope this helps.
