    Pulled two trapdoors out, which haven't seen the light of day in awhile:

    Model 1888 RR - sn 510197. Nice 1890 cartouche and original sling.

    Model 1884 - sn 298131. Faint cartouche I can't read.

    The 1888 has

    2
    F
    29

    stamped by the top screw of the butt plate. I was thinking 29th Volunteers, but it is just a guess.

    No - current wisdom, as regards that format tends toward 2nd (fill in choice of State) Infantry, F company, rifle/rack number 29
    I never believed there were SO many STUPID people in this country. Start working now to take the Senate in 2014.
