Default What if Their Plan Works?

What if the greenies get what they want, and our gasoline usage goes to near nothing, imports drop to zip, the refineries and transport systems close, hundreds of thousands are out of jobs, and we all drive very their expensive little electric cars, and we pay a handsome price for the electric power we get to fuel the things, which went up drastically when the greenies managed to shut down most of the coal fired power plants and added scrubbers to the rest, and we discover that our transportation cost have suddenly skyrocketed beyond all reason in an attempt to change the Earth's climate?

The first thing we will discover will be an obscure little fact that will surely and quickly empty our wallets. Our roads are repaired through taxes on gasoline and diesel. Big building projects are funded by grants normally, but that too is our money. Our roads need constant repair, and our local and state governments, who repair our roads at our expense, will have to find a new way to pay for repairs - which will be a new tax of no small amount (it must generate an income equivalent to the current fuel tax fund). This is not supposition, it is simple math. Road repair is usually the largest single expense local and state governments have. What will they tax? Our already inflated food (due to ethanol - another greenie success)? Land? Maybe our salaries?

Then another problem arises. The former tax was imposed on those who used the roads. They bore 100% of the cost of repairing the roads they damaged through their use, and imposed by degree of use. A fair and equitable idea. We won't be able to do that hat trick anymore. That means that some portion of the population will suddenly find themselves paying a new and substantial tax. I suspect the politicians will want to retain the old fairness doctrine, and the only way they could track who used the roads would be to track those who used the roads. Your vehicles would be tracked 24/7/365, and you would pay a tax based on usage. The problem is that you would also be tracked on a continuous basis. The government would know the location of every mobile citizen on a real time basis. Other than sticking a GPS unit in our pockets, there is no better way to track us. What happens to our privacy doctrine?

What if the grand experiment fails? The one about changing the climate? What if it doesn't work? There is nothing on Earth more complicated than the Earth's weather, and we are going to control our climate? Do you really want to change your entire lifestyle, and commit those of your grandchildren, and their children's children, to paying an incredible sum so large it will affect their daily lives to fund the most expensive, and questionable, scheme in history, and all conceived and controlled by our politicians in Washington? Have we lost our minds?

Have you ever considered there is a good reason the Earth's climate cycles? Adapt to the climate, because it will not adapt to you.

Quit buying ethanol and save the country.

You believe the Enviro-Nazi's and politicians have our best interest at heart? Watch this.

Well just one volcanic eruption negated ALL the eco-nuts efforts in the last hundred years, and volcanoes continue to do their thing.

Hey Jim, you did a fine job of explaining this situation. Don't think many of us common folk have thought that much in advance about going green on the highways or if the climate change they think they are controlling does not work. Maybe we should all have a large bubble to live in and keep the rest of the world outside it. Simple fact, you can not change what you can not control. I believe the overall climate is one of them. Control expansion and build upwards. Plant more trees maybe? Its a start. Solution, is there really a solution? Is there really a problem? Population control? Maybe that is why we really have wars.

As for keeping track of where and how you drive, Progressive Insurance I understand has a little gizmo that does that already. It is supposed to provide you with a cheaper insurance premium. Or.....is that a way to sucker you into giving up another of your freedoms, the right of privacy.

Just another thought or two that has crossed my mind today.
