    Default The Devils Rock

PLOT:Set in the Channel Islands on the eve of D Day,two Kiwi commandos, sent to destroy German gun emplacements to distract Hitler's forces away from Normandy, discover a Nazi occult plot to unleash demonic forces to win the war.

I was really surprised by this movie. I expected the usual B-flick about evil Nazi scientis,zombies...etc. It turned out to be about 100 times better than I expected. It was not a Hollywood epic or something that will win allot of awards, but it was a serious film. Part of the intrigue for me was the preview on Itunes which shows two British Commandos making a nighttime raid in an ocean going kayak. They then sneak up the beach with a Thompson and a silenced Sten, stopping to check for mines.

To loosely lay the plot out from my perspective, two commandos are distracted from their mission to divert attention away from Normandy. After hearing the screams of tortured men and finally the bloodcurdling screams of a tortured woman they decide to make an attempt to free the Nazi's prisoners. What they find instead is that the Nazi's have unleashed a succubus and they have gotten into much more than they bargained for.

The actors perform well. The lighting is good and the camera work is great. The problems I found with the commando tactics were obviously for the benefit of the camera. For example, when raiding the blockhouse they stop directly under lights instead of in the shadow. The succubus is played by a woman who is sexy, sweet, seductive and evil as the female demon without the need for silicone to carry her in the role. She appears as a normal woman through most of the scenes. The makeup is ok, but closer to a B-flick than a big budget thriller.

The storyline is developed through dialogue, not shootouts, explosions and flashes of boob. Don't worry, there is a little boob, even some butt, but it is not used to carry the movie.

Overall, I liken this to a scifi flick from the 50's done with modern technology. It reminds me of The Creature From the Black Lagoon, small cast (ten in this film), a plot developed with dialogue and suspense and a creature that is realistic enough to carry the story but is neither over the top or too low a quality.

So, if you want to pass an hour and a half on a movie of the Supernatural Nazi genre, I highly suggest this flick.

You should be able to find it, It is a Kiwi film If you watch it, I am interested to hear your thoughts on the film as well as what little gear is shown in the flick. One thing that really caught my eye was how long the silenced STEN is. The other was that they show it with the bolt open and two rounds visible in the top of the magazine. I'd venture to say 90% of movies would have gotten that part wrong.

Agreed. Not all would spot the bolt back in the correct position, ready to fire. Out of interest our most famous film director Peter Jackson. (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) is also a prolific firearms collector. I met him a few years back at an auction in Wellington.

Please don't mention king kong...LOL The tire smoking taxi cab was one of the worst things I've ever seen on film...LOL

That is interesting though as I didn't now he was a collector.

when king kong is chasing the hero through the streets of New York, the Taxi the hero is driving just seems ludicrously overpowered for the time period. But hey, it's a movie. I have tons of other more deserving complaints for that film but the cab was the one that just seemed comical to me. It was nowhere near as bad as the Godzilla movie from the 80s though.

The power of cinema. Your right .We can accept a giant monkey but find an over powered engine odd. You have to agree that the special effects were very good. All done in little old New Zealand. Out of interest the “streets of New York” were filmed just 15 minutes away from where I live. Lots of Thompsons. Whilst lacking the charm and novelty of the 1920s (?) version I still think it is the best version yet.
Is it not better to place a question mark upon a problem while seeking an answer than to put the label `God` there and consider the matter closed? Joseph Lewis

I'd say the special effects were very good, but the acting and overall story line were not as good. Jack Black also tends to ruin movies for me.

little old New Zealand seems to be the best place on earth to make a movie. If the topography isn't CGI then I guess I get it(for the scenery). Maybe the union is placable. New Zealand, Ireland, Argentina, Chile...I'd like to visit them all.
Jack Black. I guess my memories have blurred. Seems the actors today are just to human. I like the qoute from Family guy, "how does Kevin Costner keep finding work"?
