Default New to the safe, Type 38 Carbine

My Arisaka collection doubled in size today with the addition of a Type 38 Carbine. It appears to be a all matching number, Mum intact, Nagoya arsenal, 4th series. best part is, I got it for $200.

It is missing the cleaning rod, Rear sling mount, and butt plate screw

Nice find. Don Schlickman makes the cleaning rod for the carbine, and screws. http://members.shaw.ca/tju/donspartslist.htm
If you are talking about the rear sling swivel, check the usual sources. I like the phillips head screw in the butt plate- Bubba strikes again!
You know enough about Japanese firearms to know how to check for series numbers, matching parts and proof marks. Nice pictures!

Push in on the front band spring at the back of the front band, and slide the front band off. Then push in both rear band springs and slide the rear band forward and off. The handguard should then lift off and pull forward.

If someone else hasn't already done it, don't lose that little U-shaped metal piece that supports the barrel in the mid-stock.

Be gentle, it's as old as I am, maybe older. :>) Fourth Series, May, 1936 to June 1941.

worked like a charm, and the barrel support is there, but the screw that holds the front band spring in the stock is missing.

Is the backing plate for the front band spring screw still there? If not, it's a steel plate, 3/4"long x 3/8" wide, 1/8" thick. Drilled in the center and countersunk for the screw. The screw is a flat head machine screw, 1/4" long. You might be able to take the front band with you down to the local hardware store and find the correct size screw (may have to shorten it). I checked the usual suspects (gunparts and springfield sporters) and they don't even mention the screw or the plate.

The original companies have been out of business for 67 years, and the spare parts have dried up. :>)

    Good luck!

Look in the barrel channel and handguard and see if the same matching numbers are in there also. Another plus.
