Were not those patches issued in lefts and rights? The cartoon is dated 2010 for what that is worth....

What you can carry is all you need for an emergency situation. The rest you can pick up off the dead and dying if it gets that bad.
I think the cartoonist was aware of "backwards flags" on uniforms but didn't understand the concept. That's why he shows the flag in retreat....or there's something more subliminal going on in his mind.
