Default You ever wonder what the inside of petroleum storage tank looks like?

Nah, me neither. But I want to try posting pictures.

This is the inside of a 80' gasoline storage tank in which we are installing a new perimeter seal on the internal floating roof which you can see the under side of. You can also see the centre column which holds up the external roof. You can also see the legs which are dropped to put the floating roof into the maintenance position. The roof is made of aluminum ( 9000 lbs ). One of the Boilermakers is working installing a seal shoe.

Another similar shot, you can see the pontoons which the roof floats on.

Here is picture of the new Stainless Steel shoes being installed in the gap between the floating roof and the tank wall. We will also install fabric above the roof. We also have to install another ring of pontoons to handle the extra weight.

And one of the Boilermakers taking a well deserved rest.

I spent thirty three years as a "Tankie". Retired from the Boilermakers National Transient Lodge in 2007. At one time or another I built every kind of tank you could think of, from pressure vessels, to petrolium storage, to beer fermenters. It's a hot, dirty, rough job and I'm dam glad to be done with it.

Lodge 359 for these boys. Great bunch of guys. I'm in the Pipefitter's union Local 170 myself, so me and the Hogs get along just fine.

    Hi Hal,

Good guess, it's just on the other side of Burnaby mountain at Petro Canada ( now Suncor ) just up from the Barnet Inlet.

I started out in Local 83 in Kansas City then transfered over to Local 27 in St Louis and then into the NTL. I believe they've done away with the NTL now and parceled out all of the guys to the various locals. I don't miss it none!

    Default Too bad the walls

aren't bullet traps. It would make a interesting indoor range.

Great shots...never knew what they looked like on the inside.

    Thumbs up Boilermaker or millwright?

Wanting to say that we had millwrights working on similar projects. We had to clean em(HazMat) before the rework/exams.Same on herbicide/pesticide tanks, soybean oil tanks ,Co2, Hydogen Sulfide tanks etc etc all have to be cleaned & ventilated before anyone else could do their part.Did HazMat, asbestos, lead abatement from '86 on til I had to retire.

All the boilermakers we worked with were on power plants or new construction.

Very interesting! I had never seen the inside and while I enjoyed the pictures, I hope I never see it in person.
