Anyone else see this? Basically a live action version of Japanese animation.

A girl is traumatized and sent to an insane asylum by her evil stepfather. She pretends it is a mafia run brothel and that she has to be a dancer in a show. When things are ven worse than normal she falls into a deeper fantasy inside the first fantasy and she is a super tough leader of a band of lady soldiers on crazy missions.

It was the worst and best movie I have seen, at the same time.

The combat scenes in the deepest fantasies are completely off the deep end. What I enjoyed though was the mix of fantasy and accuracy.

For instance, the first fantasy battle with the full squad of beautiful women is set in an alternate WW1. The skies are filled with biplanes and triplanes, the "General" who is actually her spirit guide has a scoped 03 and after explaining that the Germans have reanimated their dead with steam and clockworks he uses it to dispatch a maxim gunner and his assistant who spew steam from the holes. The girls have M4s and MP5s and other modern gear.

It was so far off that the few realistic things were exciting to me.

overall, it reminded me of issues of HEAVY METAL magazine. I give it 5 stars for action, 5 stars for being a dark and twisted story and 3 stars for having to deal with the few annoying scenes that just bugged me.

I saw it and didn't think much of it. My only thought was it's probably a movie I would have spent a lot of time alone with when I was a teenager.

LOL, I can see that. I would have liked to see some boobs myself, but atleast there were some lookers in it.

I think the important thing was not to look at it as an epic movie with an amazing plot. After all, it was the thoughts of an insane girl hiding in her own mind. I was urprised the critics tore it apart as they usually gush over this sort of thing. I think they expected too much of it.

Did you find the mix of reality and fantasy interesting, or just annoying?

Visually it was an excellent film. The director is well known for his love of T&A and self-admitted frat boy mentality, so it was pretty much what I expected. I'll freely admit I could stare at Abbie Cornish for hours so I got something out of it.

I did find the multilayered dream within a dream approach to be one of the more interesting aspects of the movie.

What I liked about the multiple layers was that each time she regressed deeper, her world became worse but in her fantasy she was also stronger each time. In the hospital, she was weak but only had harassment and crazy people. In the brothel fantasy, she had her dancing and her allies but had more enemies and they may beat or kill her. In the battle scenes, it was the end of the world, everyone was out to kill her, but she had a band of fellow badasses to help her along. I didn't find babydoll (Emily Browning) to be very sexy. She was too childlike. The others really did something for me though.
