Prior to retirement from the local PD, I was stuck on a "Homeless Task Force" (evidently I ticked someone off!). Anyway, there was a survey of all the cities in San Diego County. Each town was to conduct a census of it's "homeless" population. Seems every city had "homeless" people except for the ritzy enclaves of Coronado and Del Mar.
Del Mar claimed NONE. Everyone in the room pointed out the "urban campers" located on the north end of town living under the old Highway 101 bridge. Del Mar's answer: Those people don't exist. WE DON'T HAVE A HOMELESS POPULATION.
At least Coronado had a better answer as to why they had no "homeless". Seems local Police Officers were under orders, that once they found a "homeless" person, they were to immediately transport that individual to the nearest public assistance agency that could address their particular problem. And ALL of those pubic assistance agencies were located across the bridge.........in San Diego.
The Coronado rep didn't like my comment. "Isn't that called KIDNAPPING?"
