What do I have?

I'm hoping for a little help from those of you who are knowledgeable in Japanese Rifles.

I purchased this rifle from an estate sale a couple years ago. I primarily collect US Martial Arms, so other than knowing it was a WWII Arisaka rifle, I know nothing about it.

I only paid $50 for it, so don't worry about telling me if it's not worth much. Thank you in advance for your time.

The cancelled "mum" and the brand on the right rear buttstock, and the two vent holes on the top of the receiver indicat a school-use type 38 carbine (but the rear sight looks like a rifle sight). A clear picture of the top of the receiver without the dust cover, and one of the right side of the receiver showing the serial number , series (if any) and manufacturer would also be helpful. Make that the left side of the receiver, where the serial number and arsenal marking is located.
Is the barrel rifled or smooth bore? It looks like there is additional marking on the barrel behind the rear sight.

You may have one of the late-war "substitute rifles" that were assembled using the Type 35 action out of whatever parts were available or at hand.A very good buy for $50 whatever it is.

naw it aint worth nothing but I will be glad to send you my address so it can keep my 38 company . Seriously the cover is worth what you gave for it just shows you that deals can still be found its a case of being in the right place at the right time.

I am just going from memory, but didn't the chinese deface the mum with a series of tiny stamped circles? The reason I ask is because the bore looks larger than 6.5mm and may have been rebarreled to 8mm Mauser.

it looks like a rifle shortened to carbine lenght that was rechambered if that is the case, the Chinese did this post war.

Is that by chance a 57 on the barrel and receiver ring? Perhaps meant to designate it had been rechambered to 6.5x57? I have a couple Arisaka sporters that were rechambered to 6.5x257. Or does the barrel have a larger than 6.5 bore?
