    Default My M&P15 arrived

I picked up my S&W M&P15 last night. I can add much in the way of "commentary" because I'm still ignorant, although I've been reading the manual they enclosed. It is chambered in 5.56mm and have a 1/9 barrel. It came with a 30-round Mpag magazine (I bought three metal 30-rounders earlier).

    (And I just COULDN'T resist!!)

Can't go wrong with a S&W. She is even sportin a battlefield pickup Colt 30 round M16 clip
from the 1st Gulf War. The MagPul grip has a hidden storage with 3 rounds in it..for hard times!!

Default M&P 15 and Mag Pul magazines

In another of Rick's M&P 15 threads, a poster noted problems with Mag Pul magazines not dropping free from the S&W M&P15. I'd recently purchased one as well & it came (via coupon) 5 Mag Pul magazines. Since I already had a variety of magazines, I just set them aside & didn't even take them out of the wrapper.

I thought I'd test them to see how they fit & ejected. I inserted each one several times into the M&P 15 and then into a Bushmaster. They ejected positively every time, even when turned sideways. When vertical, they dropped free from the mag well; when sideways, they ejected about .75". No hesitation, no dragging when being inserted or ejected; 100% function. No difference at all between the M&P 15 & the Bushmaster.

I loaded 1 mag with 30 rounds. It also inserted & dropped free as before. Loading 29 rounds was easy; I had to struggle with #30. The loaded mag would not lock in with the bolt closed. As I was in the house, I did not lock the bolt back; if I had, I have no doubt the mag would lock in place. As it was, with 29 rounds aboard, it easily & positively locked in place & ejected.

Rick, you'll find the CAR style AR's is very handy exiting vehicles and stashes easier than the 20" bbl versions do. MidwayUSA did have a sale on new AR 15 30 rd mags, you might check there.

Did you hafta sell any of your wife's china to get it?

I know it sort of is a different "path" than the M1903s and M1s I like to collect and shoot, but I just wanted one of these. I'm set for 30-round magazines. I have four, counting the one that came with the rifle. Also found out that S&W has a rebate program, which will net me five more!

Never enough mags! Especially if you run about, throwing the empties on the ground...Sooner or later they either get trashed or lost.

    Rick:

I forgot to add another virtue of the M&P 15. Mine throws cases out at 1 o'clock. ARs typically throw them at 3-4 o'clock, on the guy shooting to your right. The M&P has good manners & piles them where nobody gets dumped on. I'd be curious to know if yours does than as well.

I'm going to be tied up this week, but hope to try the new toy at the range in another week or so. I'll let you know.
