A bunch were cut up, as a friend had several thousand pounds he bought out of Red River for scrap prices. He salvaged a few usable parts as they had been torch cut right through the chamber and trigger guard area. Some looked to have been in excellent condition when cut.

Some, not too many, are still in service. Some are available through DRMO to qualified Law Enforcement agencies. Some were provided to foreign militaries. Some went to scrap.

TAACOM was also selling a couple thousand to LEO's a few years back. I saw many that were torch cut and sold as scrap in Florida about 10-12 yrs ago.

Don't know what the Army & Air Force did with theirs. But the Marines and Navy had theirs rebuilt and placed into deep storage (war stores). You could order them for auxilary security forces. I orderd fifty and received fifty new looking M1911A1's. They were reparked and completely rebuilt. In better condition than anything I ever drew from the armory as a issue weapon.

As far back as the 1960's, 1911's and 11-A-1's were being press cut at
Warner Robins ALC in Georgia. Knew a kid, working a summer job, that spent
40 hours per week doing one thing, double press cutting the world's best pistol.
He had to go thru a metal det both ways. No chance of a grip screw sliping thru.
Now that's the "Give-me-ment" at work for you!

Most of these came from the USCG and were offered in bulk piles for scrape at McDill AFB in Tampa at a government surplus auction. These were all torch cut. Many ARNG units retained theirs well into the late '90s.

Exitwounds: Some ARNG units still had them in the 2000's. In the early OIF's I saw several, mostly from units that didn't have some or all of their M9 issue and were so low priority they hadn't had a deployment since WW2.

Almost as sickening as the mind set that would destroy all those bits of history is the incredible waste of taxpayer (OUR) dollars. And we, collectively, elect these cretins!
