    Default Adjustable sight for 1917

I was reading Culver's article on the 1917 on the CMP page. He stated that the butt plate and rear sight of the BAR were very similar except the BAR sight was adjustable for windage. Has anyone tried to mount the BAR sight on a 1917?

The battle sight on the 1917 was set at 400 yards and the 03 was set at 545 yards. The Marines set the battle sight at 200 yards on the 03.

Really wish someone would make a really high front sight blade for the 1917 or some enterprising person make a few for sale bored for the 3/32 pin. Would like to set my battle sight at 200 yards and could just use Kentucky windage for the wind.

I am with you Rick on an adjustable rear sight. You can drift the front sight with the adjustment tool for the SKS / AK 47. It fits well and does the job.

These folks have the parts. You have to call for the price.

It really depends on how large of a modification you are willing to do for a windage adjustable rear sight.
I dont know about the BAR sight but the 1919A4 sight would be a great install but it would require you do drill out the mount holes and you would have to weld the adjustment disks to the rear sight housing. I am willing to bet that you would have to weld the adjustment bits for a BAR sight as well.

IIRC, there was a mod back in the day that used a modified Thompson rear sight, (made by Lyman)

however it's been years since I heard of that mod, so my memory may be off, and Thompson rear sights are not plentiful, or cheap, any longer

I dont know about the BAR sight but I know it would take a little bit of work and drilling to mount a 1919A4 sight.
Battle sight is set at 450 yards.

The building up a higher front sight isnt a bad idea, when I get settled up north in yankeeland I may give it a try, roll pin and normal sight via tig welder.

Or you could Find an Alfred Parker Model 3/53 (produced in 1953) or 3/80 (produced in 1980) micrometer sight that is simply a part for part replacement. They are NOT cheap but they also do not require modification of the rifle.

Is the A. parker sight similar to the parker hale PH5b? Or do they only replace the leaf?

the sights I mentioned previously are replacements having both windage and elevation. I do have a Parker-Hale on my M1917 but can't see the model number. Going through Edna Parkers book, the PH5b is also for the P14/M17.
Then there is the A.J. Parker twin zero model 14/53 which was the first micrometer sight made for the P14 rifle in 1935.
Again, none of these sights require modification of the rifle other than completely replacing the original sights.

Of my six P14's three have AJ Parker sights while three are original.

I do have a PH5b on one of my '17s. It's one that was sold to britian in 1940. For those interested, a PH5b sold recently on ebay for about $225. There is one on gb for less.
