I've been kicking around the idea of buying a representative example of a trapdoor Springfield for my meager collection, and the further I research, the more I find that there are a wide variety to choose from. I like the looks of the Model 1888, probably because of the ram rod bayonet.
A local dealer doesn't have one of those, but he does have a M1873, and a M1884. The 1873 is in very good condition overall, refinished stock, partial cartrouche, front sight hood, period sling and very good bore. The 1884 is also in very good condition overall, dark stock, partial cartrouche, and an excellent bore. 1873 is $850, and the 1884 is $895. Are these prices inline and which model would be more collectable?
I also plan to load up some safe ammunition (lead bullets) for whichever one I decide on so I can shoot it. Please advise if there are any "tips" (besides barrel condition) I need to keep in mind when looking these rifles over again, as to being in operational order.
Thank you!
